It was one of my busy Thursdays when I met this girl. She wasn't drop dead gorgeous. She was just simple but had a mysterious aura. She was tall and slender; she wore her hair short, and had a round and deep set of eyes.
Anyway...
It was past 10 and I just came from work. I went to my favorite coffee shop only to be disappointed because it was close. I stood there for a while and when I was about to leave, a heavy rain pour down. There was no sign that it would rain, just like the moment I met her, there was no sign, none at all. I didn't have any umbrella, just a poor morning paper. During this time, it was hard to look for a cab. People around me were running here and there looking for a shed if not a cab. I, too, had been running already when I saw her. She was standing near a store and she didn't even mind going inside. She was just there, looking at everyone. She seemed to be relaxed and careless, just feeling the raindrops on her chocolate skin. I didn't know what got into me that I went near her. I stood there looking at her, wondering if she could notice my presence.
"Don't you just love the rain?" she asked after a few minutes of deafening silence. "Because I do."
"Yeah, when I'm not wearing a tweed jacket and slacks." I replied chuckling nervously. But she didn't respond anymore. She just stared at the sky while I was staring at her. I took the chance to study her face. She wasn't really pretty. She just had a pleasant feature that's it. I guess it was her mysterious aura that pulled me to get close to her and never leave. I looked around; it was only the 24-hour shop that was open.
"Don't you want to go inside?" I asked. "It's already cold out here, you know."
She looked at me and smiled. “Sometimes, we just have to feel and enjoy what is here right now because we'll never know when it would be gone." She said staring at the sky. Whoa. I thought to myself. That's deep. I had foreseen that she wouldn't talk anymore so I initiated a conversation.
"Oh yeah, I'm Clark, by the way." I said enthusiastically handing out my hand. "And you are?"
"Names maybe the sweetest sound to human ears," she replied, ignoring my hand. "But I tell you, people would forget it, they would only remember your face and what you did."
I sighed, I was quite embarrassed, you know. I decided to stop my attempt of starting a conversation. I mean, it was obvious, she didn't want to talk. So, we stood there for like eternity just feeling the rain and the cold breeze. There were just a few people left in the place; it was just me and her, a couple waiting for a cab, and the security guard in the 24-hour shop. For what seemed to be like forever, the rain started to drop gently, the cold breeze was still there, and the area seemed to be deserted with only a few light posts to light up the dark and cold night. I looked at her and was honestly mesmerized. There was this urged of knowing the mystery behind her pleasant looking face that can't be contained. I sighed again and then she looked at me and smiled.
"You seemed to be a nice person, you know, I just wish I have more time to know you." she muttered smiling sadly. I just smiled back and asked her if she would want a cup of coffee. Finally, she said yes. I even asked her if she would want to go inside the shop, but she just smiled and shook her head. I didn't force her to go inside, I just told her to wait for me. I went inside and bought 2 cups of coffee. In my mind, I can't believe that I actually enjoyed our almost 2 hour stand in the rain, even if the only things we shared were our breaths and sudden sighs. Simple things are the best, as what my best buddy would always say. I was to pay my purchase when we heard a loud horn and a scream. I looked outside, I felt a sudden chill when I saw she was not there anymore. I went outside, I was so nervous that I almost ran where the commotion was happening. There was an accident, a car hit on someone. I was almost there and I can't believe it, it was the mysterious girl. She was hit by a car. I really can't believe it, that she was gone so soon. She was right, I may not know her name, but I would surely never forget her. . .
